BIO PLANNING 101

By Corey Poirier

There were so many options in considering the approach I would take for this blog. Still, I wanted to take an approach that I don't think everyone has in the past. And so, I wanted to talk about building your bio; specifically, I want to talk about your business bio.

Today, when so many people jump into entrepreneurial waters, I want to focus on the business bio. I believe that if you are an entrepreneur who knows how to create and position a business bio correctly, it can lead to more clients, more credibility, more media, more exposure, better leverage, and so much more.

For instance, being a bestselling author positions you better than someone in your industry who isn't a bestselling author to secure more clients. Ask almost anyone if they had to choose between a dentist who wrote a book on dentistry and one who hasn't, which one they would rather go to; in my experience, most would prefer the one who wrote the book on it.

Not only that, but often, that dentist has more media opportunities and, as a result, can charge more and have more clients than the competing dentist with no book.

So, fellow business owner, have you authored a book yet? If not, when will you?

Even if it's a compilation book, where you write a chapter, if it becomes a bestselling book, you are now a co-author of a bestselling book. How great does that look on your bio, website, social media, and email signature?

Oh, and even if you aren't an entrepreneur, writing a book on your focus area will still help you stand out from the crowd.

Now, I used a book as an example, but it could be a TEDx Talk, speaking at a prestigious event, writing for a magazine like Forbes or Entrepreneur, or appearing on a top radio show, TV show, or podcast.

Each time you add one of these to your business bio, which could even include media appearances on newer podcasts, you increase your value in the eyes of potential and future clients, and even current clients; you also enhance how people view you and your expertise in general.

It's the reason Academy Award-winning actors get paid more than their counterparts. People typically watch a movie, whether right or wrong, quicker when they see it has an Academy Award-winning actor in it; so, movie studios pay more to have said actor in their movie.

It's also the same reason Hall of Fame wrestlers or boxers get paid more to appear at events. It's why TEDx speakers get paid more to speak than non-TEDx speakers, or why celebrity speakers get paid more than non-celebrity speakers.

So again, the question is: have you started building a business bio you can leverage and position? A strong business bio will make you more indispensable; believe it or not, people will listen closer to what you say – thus allowing you to have a more significant impact.

So, back to the question: have you authored a book yet?

Again, you can insert landing a TEDx Talk or writing for a major magazine or whatever you prefer instead of authoring a book; hopefully, you get the idea.

I simply want you to know how important it is to your business to build a business bio that can catapult you to a higher level.

So, the first order of business is to take the steps needed to secure that achievement that elevates your business bio in the first place. Whether it means media reach-outs, reaching out to those who compile compilation books, or whichever achievement you choose to focus on, action is where it all begins.

The second order of business is to know how and where to leverage it.

For instance, every time you approach the media, ensure this new achievement is front and center for them to see. This means it must be in the bio you submit when being considered for opportunities. It also should be in the places I mentioned above, like your email signature.

If you do much emailing, I believe your email signature is the best piece of unused real estate available to you. So many people have nothing or very underwhelming things in their email signature; yet it's one of the things most people read first (after your email message) when you email them for the first time – AND it costs you nothing.

You should also have that new bio achievement somewhere on your website as well. Social Media is also a place where it needs to be. How many people google or check you out on LinkedIn or similar social platforms when deciding whether or not to do business with you?

You, being a bestselling author or similar, could be the one thing that moves them over the edge of deciding to work with you. Not having that achievement, whichever one it is, or not including it in these places could be the difference between a media personality deciding to bring you onto your show, a client choosing to hire you, or even a future employer deciding to reach out about an opening in their company. Ultimately, this means your impact could be diminished, simply because the achievement either didn't occur or was omitted.

So, in closing, now you know the why, and here you have the steps:

Step 1: Take action to secure the achievement

Step 2: Leverage that achievement everywhere possible.

It's just two 'simple' steps (not necessarily easy), but nothing happens until you take action.

Until then, here's to your greater success!
